Choosing the right electrical contractor, or any contractor, can be a difficult decision.  How do you choose among the multitude of contractors and tradesmen? An unwise or hasty decision may end up costing you a lot.  Take your time, do your research and ask these important questions.

10 Questions to Consider When Hiring A Contractor

1. What are the company’s warranties and guarantees?

The industry standard is 1 year for both labour and parts.

2. Ask for references and read reviews.

Don’t be afraid to ask for references!  An honest company will not hesitate to provide you with references.  Check ratings and reviews on reputable websites such as the BBB (Better Business Bureau) or Homestars. These sites verify the legitimacy of reviewers/reviews.

3. Is the company licensed and insured?

Any contractor working on your property should have valid insurance, including full liability and WCB insurance. If the company is not insured and something goes wrong or gets damaged on your property, it could be you or your insurance company that is responsible for paying to fix it. If the company does not have WCB insurance and the worker is hurt on your property, the injured party has a legal right to file a lawsuit against you.

4. Will  the correct  permits be  obtained for your project?

Obtaining permits and inspections are the responsibility of the homeowner.  Make sure your contract states that all permits will be supplied by the contractor and that all work will be completed according to code, and will pass inspection. Permits are required and should be insisted on for even a small job.

5. Will the electrician working on your property be a licensed Journeyman?

There is no governing body that says that a company must send a Journeyman to your home; They could send an apprentice. A Journeyman is supposed to supervise an apprentice but this is often overlooked or ignored to save money.

6. Are the contractor’s employees drug free and background checked?

You should feel confident that you have someone in your home you can trust.

7. Why is this company’s quote so much lower than the rest?

Cheapest isn’t always best. Pay attention to the quality of products being supplied and the quality of the workmanship going into your job. Sometimes corners are cut to make the job cheaper and most of the time you end up paying for this in the long run.

8. Can the electrician quickly and confidently answer your questions?

Ask lots of questions. Your electrician should be open and able to give quick, confident answers. If they can’t, it is often because they just don’t know.

9. Are they asking for payment in advance?

Never pay upfront for work that has not yet been completed. There are too many instances of homeowners paying money to their contractor in advance to “fund” a job and the contractor never coming back to complete the work.  If a deposit is required, ensure that the Contractor has a valid PrePaid Contractor License (PPCL) through Service Alberta.

10. Make sure the contractor supplies a contract.

Your contractor should supply you with a contract that is typed and easy to read.  The contract should include the scope of work including any supplies, materials and products they will be using/installing, and any subcontractors that will be doing work.  Homeowners should also get signed and dated receipt for payments. It is important to have a paper trail in case legal concerns arise.
